Geographical, cultural and historical context
Wavre is a town located in the Dyle valley in the Belgian province of Walloon Brabant. On June 18 and 19, 1815, the Battle of Wavre was fought here on the same day as the Battle of Waterloo. Napoleon had sentMarshal Grouchy to pursue part of the retreating Prussian army under the command of General Johann von Thielmann.
The Battle of Wavre was the final major military action of the Hundred Days campaign and the Napoleonic Wars. It was fought on 18-19 June 1815 between the Prussian rearguard under the command of General Johann von Thielmann and three corps of the French army under the command of Marshal Grouchy. The battle kept 33,000 French soldiers from reaching the battle at Waterloo, and this blocking action helped the Allied forces defeat the French army at Waterloo.
The authentic site of the Battle of Warve is located near the ancient watermill on the river Dyle known as “Moulin de Bierges”, in the capital of the province of Walloon Brabant, the town of Wavre. The monument of General Gerard who got wounded leading a frontal attack against the bridge of Bierges is located on the battle site.
