The Siege of Verrua Savoia 1625 AD
Verrua Savoia, l’Assedio del 1625
2016 dates to be announced
Verrua Savoia (Torino province, Piemonte region)
The famous fortress of Verrua Savoy, located in the Province of Turin in the Italian region Piedmont, about 35 km northeast of Turin, stands in front of river Po, on the edge of the hills of Monferrato modulated by erosion, once a rich and lush vineyards land, and now mostly covered by forests. Verrua keeps the memory of a glorious past and tormented vicissitudes of the many attacks, destructions and transfers of sovereignty by the Bishops of Vercelli, the Marquis of Monferrato and the House of Savoy.
The eternal glory of the fortress is associated especially with the two best-known and documented sieges of 1625 and 1704-1705. In 1625 AD the Duke of Savoy, signed an alliance with France against Spain and Austria. In August, the Spanish army commanded by the governor of Milan, the Duke of Feria and Captain Don Gonzalo de Cordoba, marched towards Verrua, sure to win in three days. The imperial army arrives at the stronghold with 25,000 soldiers, 5,000 horses and 20 cannons, while the Duke of Savoy, Carlo Emanuele I, has barely time to introduce the fortress a regiment of 1,200 soldiers, commanded by the Count of Saint Reran. The Spaniards have been besieging Verrua in vain for three months until the 17th November when, after a series of useless attacks and after losing over 15,000 soldiers, decided to remove the siege of Verrua and retreat to Milan. Thanks to this victory Verrua becomes a celebrated fortress in Europe.
