Keskiaikaiset Markkinat Turku
Turku (Finland Proper Region)
a unique chance to feel the medieval atmosphere at five different venues of charming Finnish town of Turku. A full-immersive marketplace atmosphere: hustle and bustle, happy reunions, rumors and pompous words about market peace, posh ladies and pretty maidens, noble gentlemen and much more...
Geographical, cultural and historical context
Turku is a city on the southwest coast of Finland at the mouth of the Aura River. It is believed to have been settled around the end of the 13th century, which makes Turku the oldest city in Finland.
Event description and programme
The Medieval Market is Finland’s largest medieval and historical event held at the Old Great Square of Turku. The medieval Turku has been built on and around the Old Great Square with the aid of market vendors, craftsmen, knights, musicians and minstrels since the year 1996. A central part of the market has always been the grand theater play, which brings historical events to the modern day in an impressive, fun and unique way. The visitors can feel the medieval atmosphere at five different venues: the Medieval Market at the Old Great Square, Turku Castle, Turku Cathedral, the Horse Tournament of Rohan Stables and the Aboa Vetus & Ars Nova museum. The festival offers a wide range of entertainment all around the market area: vendors with high quality handicrafts and medieval delicacies, skillful handicraftsmen, fierce knights, interesting lectures and guided tours in addition to musicians, actors, dancers and circus performers, who provide a memorable experience for the whole family.
