St Nicholas is often portrayed with the attributes of a bishop:
- mitre (a tall pointed hat);
- crosier (a hooked staff);
- Book of the Gospels.
There are many images connected with the stories of the Saint’s miracles, such as three golden balls or three bags of gold (representing gold given by Nicholas to three maidens to provide their dowries), ship or anchor (representing his patronage of ships and sailors), three little boys near the saint (representing the children killed by the butcher and resurrected by Nicholas).
