Medieval Festival at Castle Schmieheim
Schlossfestspiele zu Schmieheim
Schmieheim, Kippenheim (Baden-Württemberg state)
The visitors of this delightful German village can get enchanted and immerse themselves in the age of knights, swordsmen, landsknechts, jugglers, fire-eaters, jugglers, maids and many other characters of the period in the beautiful heritage site of the Schmieheim Castle...
Schmieheim, a borough of Kippenheim town, is located at the foothills of the Black Forest, nestled in a valley surrounded by woods, meadows and vineyards, about 30km from Freiburg, in southern Germany, and 40km from Strasbourg, in France. The village was mentioned for the first time in year 1144 in a document from the nearby Benedictine monastery of St. Trudbert in Münstertal (founded by Saint Trudpert, an Irish missionary from the first half of the 7th century), and is mostly known today thanks to the charming Renaissance style castle with its three towers. Schmieheim boasts also a great tradition of fruit brandies and beers, while the mild climate, the fertile soil and the gentle slopes allow the cultivation of good red and white wines. From the mid-17th Century until the 19th century Schmieheim was also a major center of Judaism, having more than 500 Jewish inhabitants and being the seat of the district rabbinate. Besides the synagogue, dated 1720 and now converted in an apartment house, part of the former rich Jewish heritage includes today the bakery, the mikvah (the ritual bath), the school, and the cemetery, which was established in 1682 and is one of the largest in the region with about 2,500 tombs.
Every year in August the Schmieheim castle host a nice medieval festival which offers the audience a charming travel back in time to experience the Middle Ages firsthand and breathe its unique charme and atmosphere. The visitors will have the chance to freely wander among the stalls, the colours and the smells of an authentic medieval market and meet musicians, flag-throwers, knights, maidens, swordsmen, mercenaries, minstrels, jesters, fire-eaters, jugglers, and many other historical characters all in faithful medieval dresses. The beautiful park around the castle hosts a historical camp where the living historians illustrate the daily life in a medieval village and the artisans exhibit all kind of wares and show their handicraft skills. The rich programme includes medieval crafts demonstrations, sword fighting and falconry displays, music and dance shows, archery contest, the representation of a medieval trial with verdict, several leisure and educational activities for children, including training for young knights and a puppet theater, as well as attractions, workshops and initiatives for all ages, delights from historical and traditional cuisine, and of course the tasty beer brewed by the community.
