The Medieval Festival in Provins
Les Médiévales de Provins
Provins (Île-de-France region)
Provins, a medieval town located on the crossroads of the former main trade routes, in the Île-de-France region, in France, is divided into an Upper Town and a Lower Town, respectively called the Châtel (Castel) and the Val (Valley), and is famous for its very well-preserved medieval fortifications and walls, as well as for the rose cultivation producing all sorts of foods from roses. Provins reached the peak of its fame during the 12th and 13th centuries, when it became the flourishing capital of the Counts of Champagne and a wealthy trade town hosting the very famous Fairs of Champagne, one of the main focuses of European trade, attracting merchants from all over Europe and the Orient, as well as many poets and trouvères (Northern France troubadours). Provins is still today a showcase of medieval architecture with many remarkable military, religious and civil buildings, a unique historical heritage which made Provins be listed among the UNESCO World Heritage Site as the town of medieval fairs.
Every year Provins relives its medieval yesteryear through a great historical event which is held in the month of June and is dedicated every year to a new theme from the Middle Ages. The festival is a full-size reenactment of the medieval life at the time of the Fairs of Champagne featuring over two thousands of historical characters in faithful period dresses" Really a festival absolutely not to miss in Europe! The rich programme includes living history displays, great parades, international concerts of medieval music, fire shows, performances of troubadours, jugglers and acrobats, dance and theatre shows, medieval ball and banquet and all kind of period entertainments, games and activities in the old town streets as well as in the historical camps and in the ramparts to make relive the atmosphere of the Fairs of Champagne. But Provins celebrates its Middle Ages also through many other events which are in calendar on several weekends from spring to autumn, like:
"The Eagles of the Ramparts"
an exciting display of falconry with splendid birds of prey in perfect harmony with horses, wolves and dromedaries in a magnificent open air theatre
"The Legend of Knights"

"The Age of the Ramparts"
a spectacular show illustrating the siege machines (like trebuchets, mangonels, catapults), as well as the techniques and the strategies of the art of war during the Middle Ages.
