Osimo (Ancona, Marche region)
Osimo (the ancient Vetus Auximum) is a town situated atop a hill near the Adriatic Sea, about 15 km from Ancona, in Marche region. Vetus Auximum was founded by the Greek colonists of Ancona, and later contended by the Gauls and the ancient Piceni, until conquered by the Romans, who used it as a fortress for their northern Picenum settlement starting from 174 BC. Osimo played then a leading role in the historical events of the Piceno area and the middle Adriatic.
Every year for a weekend the town relives its glorious past as a Roman "castrum" (a fortified military camp) crowded with senators and legionaries. Various performances, displays and cultural and leisure activities invite the visitors to take an exciting journey in the past of over two thousand years ago. The history is brought to life through the gladiators’ fights and the many living history displays and demonstrations in the camps of legionnaires. The visitors are invited to the markets and workshops related to ancient arts and crafts, it is possible also to follow several archaeological itineraries learning more about the activities and the daily life in the Ancient Rome.
