Orte, located on a high cliff in the middle Tiber Valley, about 24 km from Viterbo and 60 km from Rome, has always been an important road and rail hub, and is characterized by a considerable number of artworks in a green and beautiful natural scenery. The area boasts ancient origin being inhabitated already by the Etruscans since the 6th century BC who found also the town naming it Hurta, as witnessed by archaeological findings form a nearby necropolis. Due to its strategic position Orte became soon the war theatre of battles between Etruscans and Romans to control the territory (310 and 283 BC) until the final Roman conquest. The town was then renamed Horta (or also Hortanum), and flourished especially under the rule of Emperor Augustus (27 BC – 14 AD), being granted several public works. After the Fall of the Roman Empire, Orte was occupied and ruled in turn by the Ostrogoths, the Byzantines and the Lombards, while during the Middle Ages the town was first a free comune ruled by a podestà, before being definitely absorbed by the Papal States.
Every year, the first two weeks of September, the town hosts a spectacular and exciting historical event, “L’Ottava di Sant'Egidio”, dedicated to the patron saint of the city, an ancient medieval festival already solemnized by Pope Boniface IX in 1396, and resumed today admirably combining culture, art, history, folklore and gastronomy. The seven districts of Orte celebrate with medieval folk games and contests, theatre and music performances and historical parades, making the streets and the squares relive the colours and the atmosphere of the Middle Ages. The very rich programme includes medieval market, arts and crafts fairs, lectures, conventions and seminaries of studies, art shows, photography and antiques exhibitions, guided tours in old town, underground passageways and museums, gourmet tours through the medieval cuisine. Heart of the event are the great parade in beautiful medieval costumes, the challenge of drums (a music competition), and the Palio of the Archers, a competition in which seven archers, one for each district, equipped with wooden bows built on medieval models, are contending a 10 cm silver ring by shooting an arrow through progressively smaller rings. And last but not least the smells and the tastes of the local cuisine with the opening of the districts typical taverns, places of great historical and architectural value, where to enjoy high quality local and medieval dishes.
