Parco del Maglio Averoldi, Ome (Brescia, Lombardy region)
a unique opportunity to rediscover the atmosphere of the past life of the Celts and Romans, an immersive experience in nature and history in the wonderful scenery of a magical clearing surrounded by woods and hills where ancient traditions come back to life…
Geographical, cultural and historical context
Ome, a village located in a green valley surrounded by woods and hills with vine and olive-yards, at about 15 km from Brescia, in the gentle rolling hilly territory of Franciacorta, nestled in a natural amphitheatre in the heart of Lombardy region of Northern Italy, and famous for winemaking since the antiquity and today for the homonym sparkling wine with DOCG status. Ome boasts ancient origins, dating to pre-Roman period, and probably takes its name from the ancient Germanic word “Home or “Hometum”, that means “stone house”. Besides the typical medieval buildings, the local heritage includes as well some remarkable 16th and 18th century mansions with arcades and loggias, the so-called “Borgo del Maglio” (a medieval suburb with a running tilt Hammer), several churches of artistic and cultural value and an interesting Botanical Garden.
Event description and programme
Every July, Ome enjoys a time-travel back to its ancient past to relive the age of the Celts who inhabited these areas and left important marks on the local heritage through customs and traditions. The rich programme include guided visits to the historical camps, exhibition and workshops devoted to the ancient crafts, battle and combat reenactment, traditional Celtic and local cuisine, Celtic games, music and dance shows, arts and crafts market, archery contests, the Celtic wedding ceremony. Highlights of the event are the evocative rituals of the sacred fire lighting on Saturday night, and on Sunday afternoon the spectacular encounter of ancient civilizations on the battlefield: the Celtic and Rhaetian tribes of the valleys meet the mighty Roman legions and their Celtic allies, the Cenomani tribes.
