La Festa dels Miquelets
Olesa de Montserrat (Catalunya autonomous region)
Olesa de Montserrat, a town located in Catalunya autonomous region of Spain, is worldwide known thanks to its olive oil and textile production, as well as for the spectacular Passion play (La Passió d'Olesa), which was first documented in 1538 and achieved a world record in year 1996 featuring over 700 persons acting onstage at the same time.
The Festival of Miquelets is an historical reenactment related to the "Memorial 158", the area in Olesa de Montserrat dedicated to the memory of 158 soldiers from Austria, Switzerland, Portugal, Flanders, Holland and Catalunya who perished in the town between 1706 and 1714, during the War of Spanish Succession (the war of several European powers including a divided Spain, over the feared possible unification of the Kingdoms of Spain and France under one Bourbon monarch). "Miquelets" is the name for irregular Catalan militia that took part in the fight against the French.
The event includes the ceremony of homage to the Memorial 158 and offers the chance to meet historical reenactors of the period, visit a historical market and experience various activities and displays, such as traditional music groups' performances, legends and folktales from storytellers recalling ancient beliefs and traditions and military displays. A historical dinner with 18th-century Catalan dishes completes the program.
