Roman Festival at Nijmegen
Next edition: to be announced (the event was last held in 2014/2016)
Nijmegen (Gelderland province)
Event description and programme
The Roman Festival Foundation has a goal to give the opportunity to a broad audience to discover and learn life and traditions of the Roman era, a period closely connected to the history of the Netherlands. At the core of the event are international reenactment groups, which portray all aspects of life and activity of the Romans – civilian and military life, trade and religion.
The Festival is held on the Kops Plateau area of Nijmegen, the ancient city located in the east of the Netherlands, near the German border. Because of its unique Roman history, the Kops Plateau is a perfect location to evoke Roman history for modern eyes, ears and fingertips. Around the beginning of our era Nijmegen, thanks to its convenient location, was the base for the Roman armies that wanted to advance further to the north. The Batavians, who already lived here, became allies of the Romans. They built a command post on the Kops Plateau and around the current Valkhof Verres founded a civil settlement: Oppidum Batavorum (or city of Batavians). Here lived Roman officials, traders and a small number of Batavians, and this very period is represented during the Roman Festival at Nijmegen.
The Edition 2016 made part of the Roman Week, held in different location around the Netherlands, with events and activities focused on the Roman history. A group of Romans travels around the country with several stops at the taps along the Roman Limes. Please find out more at: http://www.romeinenweek.nl/
