Fête du Drac à Mondragon
Mondragon (Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region)
The Festival of Drac is organized at Mondragon every year, celebrating the medieval past of the village and a legend about a dragon which once lived nearby. The legend has the creature used to haunt in the Rhône river and to come out to the land from time to time, to capture young maidens into its mysterious water kingdom.
The traditional festivities dedicated to the mythical creature of Drac make Mondragon turn into a medieval village for a day, offering entertainment for adults and children, artisans' market, medieval warriors' camp, street artists with their performances and a unique atmosphere of the past and bright emotions. In the late evening the citizens, dressed in medieval costumes and arms, appear on the streets, forming a parade involving nearly 300 participants and followed by the mythical dragon figure 16 metres long. The visitors meet knights of the Drac, princes, beggars, monks, witches, street performers and other figures from the Middle Ages.
