Eight Castles for a Palio
Otto Castelli per un Palio
Rocca delle Caminate, Meldola (Forlì, Emilia-Romagna region)
Meldola is a medieval and renaissance town located along the river Ronco in a territory fertile and rich in water next to the Apennines slopes, about 12 km from Forlì and 20 km from Cesena, in Emilia-Romagna region. The town, inhabited since very ancient times, was as a prosperous Ancient Roman colony as witnessed by the remains of several patrician villas and the aqueduct still existing in the underground. The today landmark is represented by the castle (originally an early-medieval military stronghold converted then to private residence), built on a rocky spur overlooking Meldola, which is also known as “the town of the four castles” because of its four castles: Rocca di Meldola, Rocca delle Caminate, Castello di Teodorano and Castelnuovo.
Home to the yearly event in May is the imposing Rocca delle Caminate, a defensive stronghold located in the homonymous hamlet a few kilometers from Meldola and owing its name to the many battlements along the walls, or to the high number of “caminate” rooms (i.e. equipped with a fireplace, therefore heated). The great historical reenactment and the exciting knights’ tournament are inspired by the fierce fights among the mighty dynasties from Romagna contending each other the castle during the 13th and 15th centuries.
The tournament consists in a multiple competition among the knights, one for each of the ancient castles of the territory, challenging each other in several trials including the fight for the bridge, the tug of war, the archery contest, and finally the spectacular “Joust of the Almoravide”. This is an ancient jousting which originated from a military training and owed its name to the Almoravids muslim dynasties who invaded the Iberian peninsula. In the middle of the pitch is placed the target, a wooden rotating puppet representing a Saracen warrior with a shield in the left hand, while the right one is armed with a flail (a handle with three cords ending with lead balls, today made of leather). The knights gallop in turns towards it trying to strike with their spear the shield without being themselves hit by the flail. The castle garden host historical camps, music shows, performances of jugglers and acrobats, falconry and flag-throwing displays, fencing and archery tournaments, food stands with historical and local dishes. The programme includes also the medieval fair with games and crafts markets, the historical parade, and the great banquet.
