a small 21st century village travels back to the Middle Ages... the park is full of market stalls, knights in shining armour, witty jesters, and merry musicians playing tunes on their flutes, while visitors and local citizens dress up in medieval clothing in order to fit into the colourful and joyful medieval atmosphere...
Geographical, cultural and historical context
Hova is a locality and one of the two seats of Gullspång Municipality, at about 20km from Töreboda and 30km from Mariestad in Western Sweden. The village went down to history for being the spot of a a battle fought there on 14 June 1275 between a peasants army commanded by Valdemar Birgersson (1239-1302 AD), King of Sweden, and the army led by his younger brother Magnus supported by the third brother Erik, Duke of Småland, and the Danish Crown. The defeated Valdemar was deposed and had to flee to Norway, while Magnus became king of Sweden as Magnus III.
Event description and programme
Each July the Hova town centre is magically brought back in time to the medieval days. Animated by the knights in shining armour, skilled artisans, witty jesters and merry musicians, the village invites the visitors of all ages to join the great celebration of the past and feel themselves a part of the history. In order to fit into the atmosphere also local citizens and many visitors dress up in medieval clothing. The market offers a great variety of medieval goods, like jewellery, caramelized almonds or peanuts, bread, clothes. Special programs are provided for children, involving them into the world of history, and in the evening the place is lit by wonderful concerts and shows.
