Geographical, cultural and historical context
Herstmonceux is a village and civil parish located in the Wealden District of East Sussex, in England. Nestling within the beautiful local countryside, at about 3 km from the village, surrounded by 500 acres of glorious parkland and superb Elizabethan gardens, the magnificent 15th century moated castle represents one of the oldest significant brick buildings still standing in the country, embodying the history of medieval England and the romance of renaissance Europe as well. The name comes from Anglo-Saxon hyrst, "wooded hill", plus the name of the Monceux family who were lords of the manor in the 12th century.
Event description and programme
England's Medieval Festival takes place every August Bank holiday weekend since 1992 in the amazing fairy-tale setting of Herstmonceux Castle, bringing history to life thanks to over 2000 reenactors and interpreters recreating the medieval daily life and spectacular castle sieges complete with entire armies of archers, horse and cannon support. This three-day festival is the largest and most magnificent celebration of the Middle Ages in the United Kingdom, and a magical weekend for the entire family as well. The Festival allows the visitor to step back in time, and experience the sights, sounds, and smells of the colourful Middles Ages. Each day of the Festival features full armour jousting, mounted skill-at-arms, falconry, archery, cannons' demonstrations, hundreds of knights in battle, children-tailored leisure and educational activities, music, minstrels, jesters, puppetry, dancing, traders, living history encampments, workshops, food, drink and much more medieval mayhem.
