Gruissan Castle is one of the most famous landmarks of historical and architectural heritage of France, situated in Gruissan commune, Aude department. Many tourists who visit the ruins of the castle testify their growing interest in culture and history. Enthusiasts have created an association “Amis du château de Gruissan et de son histoire” which aims to bring history to life through the animations and the annual medieval festival.
An army of reenactors, medieval historians and descendants of the grandees Occitan take part in the event, which is opened by a historical parade of troops and citizens of the Middle Ages. The medieval market offers activities in arts and crafts, and besides archery contests, falconry shows and equestrian games are held. Visitors can meet ambulation and doctors, soldiers and prisoners of the village and see the Great Battle. By the evening the streets are lit with torchlights and filled with troubadours, musicians and dancers. The Medieval Ball is held, presenting the lifestyle of Occitan nobility.
