The event takes place in Cheb, a beautiful town in the Karlovy Vary Region of the Czech Republic, lying on the river Ohře (Eger in German) in a very strategic location along the border with Germany and named the “town in the heart of Europe” since being proclaimed the geographical centre of Europe by the Geographers of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire. Cheb has a very ancient and rich history dating back to the 9th Century with the first known settlement being a Slavic stronghold. Today the town offers a rich cultural life to enjoy, as well as many historic and natural sights to visit also in the surroundings, like the 12th century Castle with the Black Tower, St. Nicholas' Church, the Franciscan Church and the 13th century Marketplace.
The history of Cheb is deeply bound to the one of Albrecht von Wallenstein (1583-1634), Duke of Friedland, a Bohemian soldier and politician, who became the supreme commander of the armies of the Habsburg Monarchy and one of the major political figures during the Thirty Years War. Wallenstein often visited Cheb, where on February 25, 1634 got murdered in the burgomaster's house, a 15th century gothic town hall called Pachelbel House, now seat to a museum containing many historical relics and antiquities of Cheb visited by thousands of people over centuries. The special link between Cheb and Wallenstein is also theme of the biennial great historical event to commemorate the Duke’s stays in Cheb and to relive the atmosphere of the 17th Century civil and military daily life. The rich programme includes the historical parade celebrating Wallenstein’s arrival in Cheb with his entourage and troops, crafts markets, exhibitions, baroque music concerts, jousting tournaments in honor of the Duke, torchlight procession through the city, historical banquet, evening celebrations, street entertainment featuring jugglers, dancers and musicians, theatre, fireworks and puppet shows, falconry and fencing displays, traditional dances, lectures, religious worships and ceremonies, as well as many educational and recreational activities for children, and finally military parades, battle reenactments and guided tours at the historical camps.
