Festival of Veraison
Fète de la Veraison
Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region)
Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a commune in the Vaucluse department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in southeastern France. In the 13th century the village of Châteauneuf, with its 1000 inhabitants, grew rich and developed a flourishing vineyard. Under Pope John XXII, the wines of this area came to be known as "Vin du Pape", and the village took the name Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
Fète de la Veraison takes place in Châteauneuf-du-Pape every year the first weekend in August. The French term “veraison”, that gave name to the celebration, means the onset of ripening of the grapes. The event gathers together more than 200 reenactors in an engaging historical spectacle. The streets of the village host the medieval market, and the living history camp is open, inviting the public to experience displays illustrating the life in the Middle Ages and to participate in the numerous activities designed for adults and children. At nightfall, a torchlight parade proceeds along the streets and minstrels and musicians hold their performances.
