Festival of Carthaginians and Romans
Fiestas de Carthagineses y Romanos
Dates 2017 to be announced (the event usually takes place on the first Friday after September 15th and lasts for 10 days)
Cartagena (Murcia autonomous community),
The Festival of the Carthaginians and Romans is a great event that makes alive the history of Cartagena, from the foundation of the city as Qart-Hadasth by the Carthaginians to the conquest by the Roman general Scipio Africanus, when the city was renamed into Carthago Nova, becoming the capital of the inland Roman province.
The historical reenactment events represent Carthaginian and Roman life and traditions, both separated and united, for example, the Carthaginians' celebration of the foundation of the city with rites, the ceremony of the Sacred Fire, the oracle of the goddess Tanit, the marriage between Hannibal and the Iberian Himilce, the destruction of Sagunto by the Carthaginians. Then the great battle after the landing of the Romans and their victory are reenacted. The guests can also experience the big roman circus, the Senate's sessions, the proclamation of the Roman law, various feasts and the Roman market. The program is completed by a big parade with fireworks.
