Carnuntum Roman Festival
09,10 and 16,17.06.2018
Archäologischer Park Carnuntum, Petronell-Carnuntum (Niederösterreich state)
A great Roman Festival in an amazing Archaeological Park for the very first time over three consecutive weekends and at all of its major venues: legionaries, gladiators, craftsmen, dancers, open-air cinema, Roman cuisine and delicacies and much more to enthral the audience from all over…
Geographical, cultural and historical context
Petronell-Carnuntum is located on the right bank of the Danube River, halfway between Vienna and Bratislava, in Lower Austria state, and is home to the "Archaeological Park Carnuntum", extending over the area of 10 km² between the villages of Petronell-Carnuntum and Bad Deutsch-Altenburg, and witnessing the splendour of the ancient roman city of Carnuntum. Originally founded by Emperor Tiberius in 6 AD as a fortified winter camp of the Roman legionaries on the Danube in the Noricum province, Canuntum became soon an important metropolis and trade centre at a crossing point of important routes within the Roman Empire, as well as the capital of the Pannonia Superior province, with about 50,000 people.
The Archaeological Park Carnuntum features the major types of Roman architectures which have been faithfully reconstructed, down to the last detail, to illustrate the life of 2000 years ago, including a citizen’s house, a splendid mansion and public baths. The reconstructions are not just fictitious sets or museum settings, but functional buildings that can actually be lived in. The world of gladiators can be experienced in two well preserved large amphitheatres, while in the Museum Carnuntinum are on display some of the finest archaeological findings from the area.
Event description and programme
The Roman Festival hosted every year by the Archaeological Park ia aimed to recreate the daily life of the Roman military and civil society. Hundreds of ancient Roman reenactors, among them legionaries, artisans and merchants, animate the large historical camp and the reconstructed architectures. The rich programme includes military drills and manoeuvres of the legionaries, parades, shows of the Roman cavalry in the arena, demonstrations of the Roman siege machines and artillery, such as the catapult and the scorpion. On the whole area of the museum and along the bumpy cobblestone streets, merchants and craftsmen offer their wares and show their skills at working illustrating the ancient arts and crafts techniques. The visitors can also taste delicious historical dishes based on traditional Roman recipes accompanied by the great wines from the region.
