Bornholm Medieval Market
Bornholms Middelaldercenter, Gudhjem (Bornholm island, Capital Region)
Geographical, cultural and historical context
Bornholms Medieval Centre is situated in Gudhjem, a small town and fishing port on the northern coast of the Danish island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea. At the Medieval Centre guests have the opportunity to experience an authentic medieval atmosphere of Bornholm of thousand years ago. The houses and war machines are reconstructed on the territory of the Medieval Centre, providing an authentic ambient, where the visitors meet medieval traders and craftsmen, musicians and common citizens at their work and daily activities.
Event description and programme
The Medieval Centre becomes filled with life, when the merchants arrive from far and near to set up their market stalls during the annual Bornholm’s Medieval Market. The sound of the goldsmith’s hammer clinks over the place and mingles with the sound of the musicians’ lute, chant and bagpipes. At the same time, bonfires are blazing in the fireplaces and children are playing at the sheep’s pasture. An errant troupe of actors and comedians has established themselves at the nobleman’s farm to tell the amazed audience stories from the great outside world. The event invites the visitors to get immersed in the Middle Ages, taking part in various exciting and entertaining activities, such as blacksmithing, workshops at the water mill and the potter’s house, or experiencing the Medieval military life in the soldiers’ encampment.
