Bergen Market Viking & Medieval Festival
Bergen (Hordaland county)
A unique chance to embark on an exciting journey back to the Viking and Medieval Ages, enjoying shows and entertainment, food and trading, battles and crafts, while experiencing first-hand a bite of the Viking time and life as people did 1000 years ago…
The city of Bergen is located in Hordaland, on the west coast of Norway. The city centre and northern neighbourhoods are situated on Byfjorden and surrounded by the Seven Mountains. Bergen was an important trading centre for many centuries, and served as Norway’s capital in 1217-1299. Trading in Bergen may have started already in the 11th century, as Olav Kyrre, who founded the city in 1070, was known as the “trading king” because trade purposes were what he put most emphasis on. From the end of the 13th century Bergen became a bureau city of the Hanseatic League, and until 1789 enjoyed exclusive rights to mediate trade between Northern Norway and abroad. The Old Norse forms of the name of the city were Bergvin and Bjǫrgvin.
The Bjorgvin Market historical festival offers the chance of an exciting time-travel back to the Viking and Middle Ages through amazing living history displays that help the visitors to understand more about this particular time period and the history of Norway by making them actively involved in live-in activities and rich daily programmes. During the festival various scenes of life and war are recreated thanks to the many reenactors groups coming from all over Scandinavia and Europe. The Hordamuseet provides a great setting for the historical market, thanks to the old houses and the picturesque surroundings, while the Viking ship Håkon Håkonson is docked there, also helping to enhance the atmosphere. The visitors can attend a wealth of leisure and educational workshops and initiatives, such as crafts workshops, archery contests and ancient games, where to test their skills and training or learn about the work of the artisans while admiring their goods on show on the colourful stalls of the market, where they can also meet merchants and several historical characters from the period. Artists from different countries provides authentic music and entertainment experiences. The rich programme includes themed exhibitions and lectures, as well as storytelling and role play for children of all ages. In addition, the visitors can also enjoy historical food and drinks, as well as live demonstrations, combat and battle reenactments authentically restaged and explained by the Viking reenactors.
