the biggest Viking Festival along the West Coast of Norway: the Viking Farm, at about 15 min. walk from the Nordvegen History Centre and the St. Olav church, will be populated by more than 200 Vikings from all over Europe offering crafts market, battle reenactments, living history displays, storytelling and music shows, archery contests, horseback riding and a wealth of live-in workshops...
Geographical, cultural and historical context
The village of Avaldsnes, formerly an independent municipality, is now a part of the municipality of Karmøy in Rogaland County and is located at the north end of the island of Karmøy, near Haugesund. Avaldsnes was an ancient centre of power on the west coast of Norway and is the site of one of Norway’s more important areas of cultural history.
Event description and programme
Each year in June Avaldsnes hosts the Viking Festival. The Viking garden has several reconstructed houses from the Viking age, and the buildings help to create the unique atmosphere of this celebration of the past. The Viking festival is full of fun experiences for both children and adults. Over 200 Vikings from Norway and Europe makes the Viking farm an insight into the Viking age. At the big market there can be met the traders selling their crafts, food to tempt your taste spuds, and music for your senses. The visitors can actively participate in archery, horseback riding, rowing, workshops and other activities. Among other experiences are the entertainers, such as puppet theater, storytellers and battle reenactors.
